On 24 April 1970, The Gambia became a republic within the Commonwealth, with Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara as head of state. His portrait would appear on The Gambia’s notes for more than two decades. In 1971, the assets and liabilities of The Gambia Currency Board were vested in the Central Bank of The Gambia (CBG). That same year the currency was decimalized on the basis of 1 dalasi = 100 bututs. The dalasis replaced the pound at a rate of 5:1.
